Every team has at least one person who stands out — the one who takes initiative, offers help before being asked, or finds a way to deliver more than what’s expected. They’re the first to volunteer, the last to give up, and often the ones who quietly hold things together when the pressure is on.

But what makes someone go that extra mile?

Is it just who they are? Is it a product of good leadership? And perhaps most importantly for hiring managers and recruiters: can you spot that quality before the person even joins the team?

Let’s explore.

Why Do People Go Above and Beyond at Work

We often assume that extra effort is all about rewards or ambition. But most of the time, it’s more human than that. Here are some common reasons employees go the extra mile:

🔹 They care about the mission. When people believe in what they’re working toward, they naturally want to contribute more. A strong sense of purpose can be a huge motivator.

🔹 They feel valued. People are far more likely to go above and beyond when their efforts are recognized. A sincere “thank you” or acknowledgment in a team meeting can do wonders.

🔹 They’re trusted. When managers give employees autonomy and room to make decisions, it builds confidence. That trust often leads to greater ownership and pride in their work.

🔹 They’re growing. People who are learning, developing, and being challenged tend to invest more energy. Effort increases when the work feels meaningful and offers something in return.

🔹 They’re led well. Managers who inspire, support, and lead with integrity create the kind of environment where people want to give their best.

So — Can Recruiters or Hiring Managers Spot This Early?

While it’s not foolproof, there are ways to identify candidates who are more likely to go the extra mile:

Look for initiative in their past experience. Ask, “Can you tell me about a time you took on something outside your normal responsibilities?” or “When was the last time you exceeded expectations at work?” Genuine examples speak volumes.

Watch how they talk about challenges. Candidates with a strong work ethic tend to light up when talking about tough situations they’ve overcome. Listen for signs of ownership, problem-solving, and resilience.

Gauge their curiosity. Candidates who ask thoughtful questions and show real interest in the company’s goals or challenges are often more invested — even before they’ve started.

Spot the passion. Enthusiasm can’t be faked for long. Candidates who are excited by the opportunity, not just the paycheck, often bring that same energy into the job.

Hiring Is Just the Beginning

Even if you spot the perfect candidate, the real magic happens once they’re part of your team.

That spark — the one that makes people go above and beyond — still needs fuel. As a leader or employer, your role is to nurture it. Recognize good work, give people room to grow, and lead in a way that inspires loyalty, not just compliance.

Because at the end of the day, people don’t just work hard for companies — they work hard for people who believe in them.
